The
Pontiac Silverdome, like most domes stadiums, normally has
a field made from artificial turf. However, the World Cup
Soccer Host Committee required that the Silverdome be fitted
with a natural grass field that could survive three weeks
of soccer matches. The Detroit World Cup Bid Committee asked
scientists at Michigan State University to help.
Because
of the lack of natural light in the Silverdome, scientists
had to design a turf system that could be grown outside the
Silverdome and then brought inside and prepared for play.
They grew the turf in about 2000 hexagonal pieces, each 7.5
feet wide. About two weeks before the first soccer game was
to be played on the turf, the hexagonal pieces were brought
inside and pieced together. Why do you think researchers chose
hexagons rather than squares, rectangles, or some other shape?

Tips
for the Linguistically Diverse Classroom
Rebus
Scenario The Rebus Scenario technique is described
in detail in Getting to Know CMP. This technique involves
sketching rebuses on the chalkboard that correspond to key words
in the story or information that you present orally. Example: Some
key words and phrases for which you may need to draw rebuses while
discussing the "Did you know?" feature are soccer (a soccer
ball), lack of natural light (darkened dome), hexogonal
pieces (turf growing in a hexogonal shape), pieced together
(seven hexagons of turf connected together), squares (drawing
of squares), rectangles (drawing of rectangles), other
shapes (a diamond, a circle, and a pentagon).
